Challenge

After T-Mobile merged with Sprint, Rentacrate was responsible for decommissioning 37 redundant cell switch sites across multiple regions within 5 months to meet a tight budget, requiring coordination with multiple teams and vendors nationwide.

Solution

Rentacrate developed a standardized decommissioning model after a successful test run in Las Vegas and Reno, NV. With full coordination and visibility with T-Mobile's PM teams, Rentacrate led the effort to decommission 37 sites on time, working alongside other service providers.

Outcome

Rentacrate completed the decommissioning ahead of schedule, averaging 4 days per site instead of the planned 7 days, and recycling 60% of materials. The project was completed within budget, and Rentacrate will be T-Mobile’s partner for future decommissioning projects.

Challenge

After merging with Sprint, T-Mobile needed to decommission 37 redundant cell switch sites across the U.S., including Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. This large-scale project had to be completed within 5 months, using expiring “Cause to Cure” merger funds. T-Mobile needed full visibility and control over the decommissioning process for each site, and coordination was required across multiple PM teams and vendors. The tight timeline added to the complexity, making it crucial to have a trusted partner that could represent their interests at each location and deliver on time.

Industry Trend

The telecommunications industry is evolving, leading to downsizing and optimization of physical infrastructure by large providers like T-Mobile. The shift to 5G and cloud-based technologies is reducing the need for traditional switch sites and data centers. Telecom companies are consolidating infrastructure, driving an increased need for decommissioning services and site repurposing, helping to streamline operations and focus on digital solutions.

Solution

Rentacrate partnered with T-Mobile’s Critical Infrastructure Group, becoming an extension of their team to ensure a seamless decommissioning process. Our VP of operations worked closely with T-Mobile's PM teams to develop a standardized decommissioning model. After initial tests in Las Vegas and Reno, we rolled out this model across the 37 sites.

Key to the success of this project was Rentacrate’s ability to coordinate all vendors involved, including shredding, eCycling, and property management teams. By establishing clear communication lines and ensuring total visibility at every step, we made things easier for T-Mobile’s teams. We managed the entire process, from site evaluations to equipment removal, ensuring that each location was left in "white space" condition, ready for handover.

We reached out to Rentacrate with a challenging task: help us to decommission dozens of sites in just a few months. These sites were located all over the country and varied greatly in size, complexity and timelines. They did not hesitate. They had folks on the ground at our sites within the week and worked together with us to get the job completed quickly and under budget. If you’ve got a project you are trying to wrap your mind around, just reach out!

Outcome

Rentacrate successfully decommissioned all 37 sites ahead of schedule, reducing the average decommissioning time from a planned 7 days to just 4 days per site. The project was completed under budget, delivering significant cost savings to T-Mobile while maintaining the highest standards of service. Rentacrate also prioritized sustainability throughout the process, with 60% of materials being recycled and the remaining 40% disposed of responsibly.

T-Mobile was highly satisfied with the project’s outcomes, and Rentacrate has since been selected for future decommissioning projects, further solidifying our trusted partnership.
